7 Ways to Wear A Plaid Flannel Shirt

I’m way off schedule this week! Life is busy and it’s catching up to me. I cannot do all the things at one time so I’m a couple of days late with this week’s edition of Fashion A to Z. It’s an appropriate subject for the week due to the temperature drops everyone is experiencing. It’s in the 30s here! What better way to cozy up and stay warm than with flannel.

Even better is a plaid flannel shirt. I’ve got 7 ways to wear a plaid flannel shirt for you.

Flannel- a soft twilled wool or worsted fabric with a loose texture and a slightly napped surface. It is now often made of cotton or synthetic fabrics.

Called flanelle by the French and flanell by the Germans, it was first created by the Welsh in the 17th century as a replacement to plain wool clothing. It proved to be more durable, affordable and warm and it’s popularity grew.

In 1889 Hamilton Carhartt began producing flannel garments in Detroit, Michigan. In the 50’s and 60’s the material was used to make men’s suit. In the 90’s grunge bands popularized flannel once again. (source)

Flannel has been used for pajamas, sheets, jackets, and most famously, shirts. Flannel and plaid are synonymous for some, but flannel is the fabric and plaid is the pattern.

A flannel shirt makes for easy fall and winter dressing and the plaid patterns are perfect for seasonal and holiday outfits. Grab a red or green plaid flannel shirt and pair it with any bottoms for an instant Christmas outfit.

I counted mine today- I have seven. I might be a little obsessed for someone who lives in a warm climate and only gets to wear them periodically.
