The Pantone Color of the Year for 2023
Pantone has declared Viva Magenta as the color of the year. It’s rooted in nature and chosen to acknowledge our increased appreciation for nature and outdoor activities since the pandemic.
Viva Magenta is a reddish purple, a hybrid between warm and cool tones. It’s bold and powerful, but not aggressive. It’s meant to be a joyful color.
Viva Magenta is a universally flattering shade all can wear. It’s going to be popular this spring but I haven’t seen it taking over the other colors in the spring palette. If it’s not your thing, you can skip it or experiment wtih it in small doses on nails or lips.
You can find this shade at Old Navy in a puff sleeve smocked baby doll top. The color there is called boysenberry juice. Pair it with dark wash flare jeans. The flares create the perfect balance to the puff sleeves and the magenta works well with navy and dark blues.

Another option is to pair it with white or grey bottoms.
The Pantone Spring Summer 2023 New York Fashion Week Color Palette
The Pantone Color Institute forecasts ten colors for spring/summer and fall/winter based on colors used by designers and seen in the fashion week runway shows around the world for each season. They also predict five core classic or neutral colors. Predictions for trending colors are also based on the general moods and vibes in the culture of the area they are forecast for. There are generally four palettes from four key runway shows- New York, London, Milan and Paris.
Color palettes are still being influenced by COVID lockdowns and new found freedoms as we move forward. This season bold color continues to play a starring role, but there are still a few pastels and neutrals for those that shy away from color.
Rather than run through all ten of the palette, I’m highlighting a combination of ten 2023 color trends that are abundant in the stores we shop at and colors called out by all the big fashion sites. Most of these are part of the Spring/Summer 2023 New York Color Palette, but a few are outside of it. Sometimes colors become fashion trends regardless of whether they were included in a palette or not. We’ve already discussed Viva Magenta.
Pastels are a given for spring in any year. This year’s trending pastel is lilac or lavendar. Try adding a hint of lilac or lavendar to your wardrobe this season and you’ll definitely be on trend. Consider a floral blouse in this color or work pants for a light, airy spring outfit. A cocktail dress in lavendar is perfect for a spring wedding.
Pastel/ powder blues
The Pantone Spring Summer 2023 New York palette features summer song- a greyish pastel blue and blue perennial. Both are calming blues. Both evoke the freshness of the season. The greyish pastel blue is reminiscent of a light summer breeze, while the blue perennial evokes the tranquility of a day by the lake. Together these shades of blue create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for spring.
The London palette features electric blue lemonade- a bright blue related to cobalt. I’m all here for both! My spring wardrobe generally consists of a lot of blue and pink. These blues are a carry over from winter. Keep rocking those blue sweaters into early spring.
Hello yellow! Yellow has gotten a lot of press since 2021 when Illuminating was the color of the year. A rich bold and bright yellow is trending this season.
Don’t worry if yellow isn’t your color. Wear it away from your face. Use it in accessories. Incorporating yellow into your wardrobe doesn’t mean you have to make it a statement piece. Yellow can be a subtle accent color, too. Just a pop of yellow can help to brighten up a look.
Hot pink, pastel pink, Barbie pink, bubblegum pink- pink, pink, pink. It’s here to stay. Choose whatever shade pleases you. The most popular shade popping up in stores is the bright vivid pink closely aligned with the beetroot purple in the 2023 collection.
If you haven’t added it to your wardrobe yet, go ahead and be brave. You will have so much fun. Whether you choose to wear it in solid pieces or sparingly in pink gingham or pink florals, it’s easy to add to your look.
Top- Old Navy; pants- Old Navy; pumps- similar
Again, Old Navy is on trend with the colors of the season. Their famous pixie pants come in this delicious fun shade of pink. Pair them with a patterned blouse.
This blouse features three of the trending colors- pink, blue and yellow- as well as some olive to tone things down. This blouse could easily be a workhorse in your spring wardrobe and can easily be worn with or accessorized with many of the trending spring colors.
Called tangelo in the Pantone collection, this color is everywhere! Pair it up with hot pink and make a statement with your outfit. Tangelo provides a vibrant and energetic pop of color that can be used in many ways to dress up an outfit or create a casual athleisure look.
Experiment with different proportions, such as an all-over tangelo look or a mix of black, gray and tangelo to create a bold and eye-catching style. Colored shorts and skirts can be paired with complementary tops, like a plain white t-shirt or a flowy blouse, to bring the look together. Whichever way you choose to embrace tangelo, you’ll be sure to get noticed and stay on trend.
Peach pink is a peachy coral tone that’s still bright and refreshing but a little less bold than tangelo. For an eye-catching look, try pairing peach pink with white, light grey, or even a mustard yellow. And for a subtler appeal, choose navy, olive green, or champagne hues.
Oh yes! If you have looked at any clothing retailer online or in store, then I don’t even have to tell you that this color is trending. It was popular last year and it’s back. It’s the perfect compliment to navy. For bolder looks, pair it with bright pink, or any of the other trending bright colors. The vivid green really pops against white.
Shirt- Old Navy; pants- Gap; loafers- Target
This relaxed linen-blend boyfriend shirt boasts this amazing color. Pair it with white jeans and loafers for the easiest spring outfit ever.
Black? For spring? It is a classic neutral. All the fashion sites predict all black outfits to be a trend this season. If all of the bright colors above have you wanting to run and hide, or if cool edgy looks are your style, then rejoice! You can be on trend in all black this season.
