Summer date night outfit

Summer date nights can be fun but they also present a question of what to wear for a summer date night outfit. Will there be cold air conditioning indoors or will it be hot outside? Even more concerning to a woman over 40 is how to dress for date night when you no longer wear short skirts or body hugging dresses or low cut tops. You still want a little sex appeal mixed with some modesty. Keep reading for a fun outfit that hits a great compromise.

I recently purchased this tassel top from JCPenney and thought it would make the perfect summer date night outfit with my DIY fray hem jeans. I love the bright orange against the light blue. I don’t know if the tassels or the color caught my attention first. To my credit, I didn’t purchase the top the first time I saw it, but I thought about it, and when I went back to make some other returns, I tried it on. And it’s a good one. It stays in place!

The off shoulder top allows you to show a little skin and still be modest. Paired with lace up sandals, it’s got plenty of date night vibes going on.

Since springtime, I’ve been on the lookout for some lighter color jeans. I let some at Loft sell out in my size before I decided to purchase them. To be honest, darker denim is slimming and I wasn’t sure I could pull off the lighter denim. But….these are a pair of high-waisted mom jeans (maybe even vintage) that I came across at the thrift store. They have a lot of stretches and they are not skinny jeans. I knew they would be the perfect pair to try my own DIY cropped frayed hems and have a little flair for my crop. It is really simple- just cut them where you want and start pulling threads. They will continue to fray on their own as well with a few washings.

I really love this clutch too. It’s huge and holds a lot of stuff. The sad news is that it is still sold out, but the pom pom clutch or tassel purse would work equally well with an outfit like this. Don’t forget you can save 15% off your purchase with code SOUTHERNCHIC.
