A to Z Fashion: D for Denim

Hello! I’m back again with another edition of A to Z fashion and this week it’s all about denim.

We all recognize denim, but what is it?

It’s a type of cotton twill fabric in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads. Huh? The weft is the filling thread and the warp are the lengthwise threads that are held stationary in the weaving process. The warp is usually colored (blue) and the weft is white. The end result is a diagonal pattern in the threads that set it apart from other cotton fabrics. This type of weave makes it very sturdy and a great choice for labor work clothing.

The word derives from the French word Serge de Nimes, referring to the city of Nimes. De Nimes means “of the Nimes”, and well, you can see how it became slurred into denim.

This durable fabric became popular in America when Levi Strauss (a cloth merchant) and Jacob Davis (a tailor) got together in 1873 to fill an order for a sturdy pair of trousers. As they say, the rest is history. Jeans were invented. If you want to know more about the various types of denim we have now, this is a good article to read.

Jeans are the most popular item in denim, but let’s save that discussion for another day. Let’s look at two other popular denim pieces- the jacket and skirt.

The Denim Jacket

Around 1880, Levi Strauss created the first denim jacket as another durable piece for laborers. this jacket has been worn by some of the most iconic figures in history and is still going strong today. Pair it with more denim, dresses, skirts, or anything to give an outfit a cool, dressed down vibe.

The denim skirt appeared in the 1970’s and originally resembled a pair of jeans with a button fly, zipper and belt loops. They have evolved to having zippers in front, back and on the sides. You can find them in lengths from mini to midi. The most classic style of this skirt is a pencil skirt style.

The denim skirt is a great piece to wear year round. You can even wear one in the winter with sweaters, tights and boots.
