Before we jump in (pun intended), I wanted to let you know that I started a facebook page for Savvy Southern Chic this weekend. It needs some likes and followers so I’d be grateful for your support.

Jumpsuits can be tricky to shop for and hard to find just the right fit. I’ve lost count of the number of jumpsuits I’ve tried on this summer. Now that I’ve somewhat gotten down what I should look for I’ve added three to my closet that will fit any occasion.

The first one is this striped jumpsuit from Banana Republic. It’s a nice ponte knit that hangs well and skims over the body. It’s easy to dress up or down. It would be great for any casual event worn with flat sandals. It’s now sold out in stripes but still available in a solid. I’m wearing a 8P but wish I had stuck with 6P but it does stretch some. I’ve linked up some other similar options.

Next is a jumpsuit with slightly more dressier vibes but it could still be worn to casual occasions. Footwear and accessories would drive how dressy or casual it appears. I would wear it to a beach or garden wedding. This jumpsuit is from Amazon. I’m wearing the 8/10 size.

The last option I’d wear to more dressy outings or would even throw a blazer on with it and wear it to the office in a more relaxed office environment. I think it might raise eyebrows at my office. I already raise eyebrows with some of my shoes and colors I wear even thought they are in compliance- (closed toes shoes). This jumpsuit is another Amazon find and I’m wearing it in a large.

So, how does the petite pear shaped woman find a jumpsuit that fits? Lots of trial and error! Haha.

Tips for shopping for jumpsuits

1- Fit is key! Well, duh! Isn’t that true of every piece of clothing? But you really need to pay attention to fit here. Too tight is just gross and distasteful (unless you are catwoman ?)and if it’s too big you will be lost in a tent.

But fit is the problem to begin with anyway. Look for one that gives you the option of a belt and tying the belt where you want. A jumpsuit with a well defined waist in the style probably isn’t going to fit well for a short waisted petite pear. Look for one with a belt so you can define your waist where you want to. The second jumpsuit I’m wearing does not have a belt but it has some other features I’m going to discuss.

And shop the petite sizing if you are petite. The proportions will definitely work better.

2. Pay attention to the fabric.  Drape is important in a one piece item. Cheaper fabrics may not lay well. If you have a garment you love the fit and feel of, check the label to see the fabric content. Do cottons  or rayons work better for you? or particular blends? I’ve found this particularly helpful in finding work pants that fit as well- a 6 in one fabric won’t fit like a size 6 in another fabric.  A stretchier jumpsuit will be easier to get on and off too.

3. Go with solids or small prints. Darker solids or prints will be more comfortable to ease into if you are a little afraid of wearing a garment like this. Vertical stripes will lengthen a petite frame.

4. Pay attention to the neckline. The neckline can help balance wider hips especially an off shoulder style. A vneck is usually universally flattering. This second one pictured, along with the tie detail help to draw the eye up and away from hips and larger stomachs.

5. Decide what shoes you will want to wear. Heels usually work better with wide leg or cropped jumpsuits. Remember wedges count as heels too.

Have a great week.
