Fall season is on it’s way. We are even having cooler mornings now. While they are just a tease and we will still have some hot days, a girl can dream of bonfires, cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice and all the things fall brings with it. Fall also brings lots of great fashion (bring on the layers!) but for some it can bring a little stress over what to shop for and what to wear. If you’re over 40, you might wonder how you can incorporate the fall trends without looking out of place.
Bright colors are in; denim styles are changing; cable knit; large totes; the 90s are back; preppy- how do you navigate all these trends? Keep reading for five fall trends that women of any age can lean into this season.
Fall Fashion Trends in 2021 for Over 40 Ladies
You may feel like we are going back in time here. How far back is totally up to you. Originally designed for men, the sweater vest was popularized around 1930. Every decade since has seen some form of the sweater vest, and it eventually became popular for women.
There are lots of options to choose from in a sweater vest- oversized, fitted, cropped, houndstooth, cable knit, argyle, preppy, neutral, or bright. In other words, you can’t go wrong in picking a sweater vest. How you style it might be a little more tricky. Just remember it’s all about balance. If one piece is fitted, the other half of an outfit should be fuller or looser. A sweater vest works great over a button down, shirt dress or mock neck/ turtleneck.
Cable knit is made from a knitting style that forms cables that resemble small ropes crossing over each other. It’s a pretty classic style for sweaters, but sometimes the classics get pushed to the front to become a trend. Sweaters are not the only thing you will see cable knit in this year. It’s on everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING. Cable knit shorts, joggers, skirts and sets abound. If a cable knit shorts set isn’t your idea of a fall outfit for women over 40, you can stick to your sweater and still be on trend. Combine two trends into one and go for a cable knit sweater vest or cable knit cropped cardigan. Button front cropped cardigans are trendy too.
Chains, chains, chains
Find chains on mule loafers, boots and purses this fall. Wear them around your neck. The chunkier versions adorn shoes and accessories, but you don’t have to go so thick with necklaces. Chain link and paper clip style necklaces are trending in any size. Chains on loafers and boots are an easy way to update a look if you are over 40.
Straight leg jeans/ looser denim
Straight leg jeans have been making there way back into the forefront for a couple of seasons now, and this fall any looser cut of jeans goes. Flare, kick crop, boot cut or baggy- anything but skinny jeans. Skinny jeans aren’t necessarily out of style, but the pandemic has everyone wanting more comfortable clothing, so the looser fits are more trendy. Straight leg, flare and boot cut jeans certainly make wearing boots easier, so I’m not complaining.
I’m incorporating the sweater vest, chain mule loafers, and straight leg jeans into this look. The vest is from Amazon and it’s decent quality. When I’m a little unsure of how often I will wear a trend or an item, I usually spend less. I invest more money into the classic pieces that I know I will wear often and for years to come.
If I had an option to size down in the vest, I would. It feels a little big to me but oversized or slightly oversized sweater vests are trendy so I’m going to keep it. The mules are also from Amazon. The color works great with the vest but on its own seemed a little light for fall. I took a poll on Instagram and the results were an overwhelming yes for wearing this color in fall. Red is also one of the Pantone fall colors so I added a pop of red to this otherwise neutral outfit with the bag.
Lug Sole Boots- The Fall Fashion Trend You’ll Love or Hate
I have a feeling this one is going to be one that you either love or hate. I’m in the “love” category right now but I haven’t pulled the trigger on buying a pair. I certainly can’t wear this more casual style to work so I’m still debating how much wear a pair of these boots will actually get. Combat boots were the thing last year and this year lug sole Chelsea boots are the pair to have. A lug sole is a rubber sole with deep indentations or grooves to provide added grip, giving a shoes anti slip properties and providing better footing. The lug sole has long been seen on work boots and hiking boots, so who would have ever thought they would become a fashion item?
