Finding long shirts to wear with leggings can be as daunting as finding that proverbial pot of gold. Is it long enough? Loose enough? Too loose?
Don’t fret. I’ve been doing some research and I’m sharing some tips for finding tops to wear with leggings, as well as a few tops I’ve tried and reviewed.
How to Find the Best Long Shirts to Wear With Leggings
Do you have a favorite top that you wear with leggings? Is it the perfect length? Measure it.
Measure your top from the top of the neckline (minus any collar) to the bottom along the back. This is your back length. You may also want to measure the front of the shirt as some websites give you both measurements. Now that you know your sweet spot length, you can use this when shopping online for long shirts to wear with leggings.
I’ve seen advice to not wear tops shorter than mid thigh with leggings but be mindful of this, especially if that’s your widest point, or if you are petite. A top at mid thigh or longer might be a bit too long for me. As long as your bum and front side are sufficiently covered, I say the top is long enough.
Find your sweet spot, measure, and go with it. You can even carry a small measuring tape with you in your purse to measure tops in the store.
Something Else to Consider When Shopping for Shirts for Leggings- Fabric.
Yes, consider the fabric. You don’t want to pair tops that are too clingy with leggings and you also don’t want them too loose and billowy. You want to create balance. Look for tops that drape (or hang) well. Fabrics and blends of cotton, polyester, silk or rayon will usually work well.
One More Thing to Consider When Choosing Tops-The Neckline
Make sure you choose tops with necklines that flatter you the best. Outfits with leggings are really about the tops, so make sure it’s the most flattering top it can be. You can find out more about necklines in my two part series.
Most of the shirts I’m sharing are on the casual side, but there are tops out there that can be used to create dressier outfits with leggings. I’ll share those first.
A tunic sweater is perfect with leggings. This long chunky sweater pairs well with leggings. It’s a great tunic sweater to wear with leggings. It’s super cozy too, with cute pockets on the front. I’m wearing it in a small but I’d recommend sizing up for a roomier fit.
Pictured: Zella leggings– These are thick and have great compression to sculpt and hold you in.
This Daily Ritual Georgette Tunic If you have been looking for dressy long tops for leggings, this is a great option for creating a dressier look with leggings. It’s longer in the back than the front, but long enough to cover on me. It might not work on a larger busted or taller woman, but it is definitely an option for petites.
This plaid tunic top is also ideal for creating a slightly dressier look. It’s a great length and it’s not so long that you can’t tuck it into regular pants. It’s also soft enough for tucking, but hangs beautifully untucked.
This top easily dresses up or down. It’s soft and it’s a polyester blend that has a nice drape to it. I’m wearing it in a small. It comes in 6 colors.
The remaining shirts all work for casual looks. Sometimes casual is the best and most comfortable way to go to create cute outfits with leggings.
A polyester/cotton blend top that comes in several colors and styles, including some colorblock options. I’m wearing a small but might size up for a looser fit in the hips.
This zip up hoodie makes a great casual leggings outfit. It is long enough to provide coverage and has a rounded hem line. I’m wearing a small.
With a faux shirt tail, this zip up hoodie also provides ample coverage for leggings. Wearing a small.
This top comes in lots of fun colors and might work for a slimmer build. I’m wearing a small and need to size up for a better fit at the bottom/hips but the sleeves are already bordering being too long in the small.
I paired it with Colorfulkoala Women’s High Waisted Yoga Pants 7/8 Length Leggings with Pockets in camo. These leggings receive over 20,000 5 star ratings and were definitely keepers. The 7/8 length is great for petites.
This super soft tee was a keeper too and works with leggings on smaller, petite women. If you are taller or larger, it might be a tad too short. Wearing a small.
I ordered this in a small but they sent an x-large. I tried it on anyway so you can see how cute it is. If they had sent the correct size, I would have likely kept it. It’s really soft and comfy. The leggings are CRZ YOGA Women’s Naked Feeling I High Waist Tight Yoga Pants Workout Leggings – 25 Inches. I didn’t really care for the very thin, “naked” feeling.
So far all of these tops are from Amazon, but you can find great tops to wear with leggings from other places with the tips I gave you in the beginning.
Here’s a great option from Gap: softspun cowl neck top. It’s really soft but a little on the flimsy side. (Yes, that’s a highly technical fashion term- flimsy.) If you like a sturdier garment, or if you like garments highly starched, you might not like this, but it hangs decently in spite of being so soft.
Old Navy usually has great options for shirts to wear with leggings, particularly their button up tunic tops. I didn’t pair this one with leggings, but I could given the length.

I have no idea why the last half of the post is in bold. It’s not coded or set that way intentionally. I’ve made some unsuccessful attempts to fix it but it is what is is for now.
