Wide leg crop pants have been trending for a couple of years now. If you are like me, and are a little late to the trend, you may have been wondering what to wear with wide leg crop pants and how to style them. Maybe you haven’t tried them because you think they just aren’t for you. I say give them a try. You might be surprised. Keep reading for some secrets to styling wide leg pants.
I took my own advise and ordered a pair of wide leg crop pants from Gap this fall. While the overall silhouette isn’t the absolute best look for a short waisted petite person, there are a few tricks to pulling off this look. I find them fun to wear and a nice change from jeans. Since I’ve slimmed up with the help of FWTFL, high waisted jeans and pants are more tolerable. This particular pair is a cotton/spandex blend with a little stretch. The material is thick and substantial, but not too thick so they hold you in but don’t add too much extra bulk with the material. I picked a neutral color that goes with everything.
Tips for wearing wide leg crop pants
Pay attention to the fabric. A softer fabric will hang and swing more and might not be the look you are going for in this cut of pants. Too stiff of a fabric and they may have a strange silhouette.
Mind the length. On some of the models, the pants come all the way to the ankles. I ordered a regular and a petite to see which worked best for me. With a wide leg, more of a crop works with my petite heights. The ones that came all the way to the top of the ankle made me look dumpy and wide, so I went with the shorter petite length.
Create balance. If you are wider in the hips, a pair of wide leg crop pants that are wide all the way down might make you look bigger. A pair that is fitted in the hips and wide at the bottom leg opening will help balance the hips. Adding a cropped jacket on top like this knit moto that stops just before the widest part of your hips will help create some balance too. (More tips for wide hips here.)
The denim jacket serve the same purpose in this outfit.
Tuck in your tops. Don’t wear too much volume on top. There is a lot of volume going on down below with wide leg pants, so keep the top more fitted. If you are small busted, a little detail like some ruffles won’t hurt, but larger busted women might want to stay away from the extra details when wearing wide leg pants. If you are short waisted and wearing high waisted pants, tuck to decrease volume but pull a little of the top back out and let it hang over the waist slightly. If I had not done this, I would like like I was chopped in two about two-thirds of the way up.
I didn’t tuck in this sweater, but it’s not long and it’s somewhat fitted. The necklace and earrings help keep the eye drawn upward and help out with balance.
What shoes should you wear with wide leg crop pants?
To keep the look long and lean instead of choppy, go for a pointed toe shoe, especially for flats if you are petite. An even better shoe choice for petites with wide leg pants is a little heel or wedge. You can also wear sneakers but definitely keep balance and proportions in mind.
