Today is National Lipstick Day! It’s celebrated every year on July 29, or at least since 2016 when beauty blogger, entrepreneur and International Businesswoman, Huda Kattan was named the modern-day founder of National Lipstick Day by a Proclamation from National Day Calendar’s Registrar. It’s not a legit holiday, but it ‘s been celebrated by beauty enthusiasts and influencers for about a decade now. It’s not clear where the “holiday” really came from.
Lipstick itself has been around for thousands of years and at times contained some disgusting things I don’t want on my lips! Ground insects? No thanks! It wasn’t always approved of and was somewhat scandalous at times. British Parliament banned it in 1770 calling it a devilish attempt to trick men into marriage, while Winston Churchill is said to have kept it in production in World War II because he felt it boosted morale. Modern women seem to have a love/hate relationship with the stuff- the average woman spends $15,000 on makeup in her lifetime, $1780 of that goes to lipstick.
I’ve been keeping notes for a while on the most highly recommended lipsticks, including the favorites of “experts” and real women who hang out in some of the Facebook groups I belong to. Lipstick recommendations are always a popular topic in fashion and beauty groups. I’m a “apply one and forget it” type. I might start my day in lipstick and then I forget to reapply once it’s gone unless I have a court appearance after lunch. Then it’s more about the teeth check than the lipstick, lol, but I do have my favorites and the perfect pop of color can certainly brighten your face.
Make sure you read all the way to the end for special deals in honor of the day!
1 The most highly recommended lipstick from my sources is Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution, in particular Pillow Talk. A three piece set including a liner, lipstick and collagen lip bath will be featured as part of the upcoming Nordstrom Anniversary sale. This shade is highly touted as a great everyday nude.
2 Mac – in Ruby Woo. This seems to be the most popular red. Think you can’t pull off a red lipstick? It’s like everything else- it’s about finding the one for your type. In this case your skin tone and coloring dictate which shades look best on you.
3 Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink A matte lipstick has more wax and pigment and less oil, which makes for a rich, opaque, product that is deeper in color and long-wearing. This one from Maybelline is also a liquid and claims to last 16 hours.
5- Tarte– This brand comes up a lot in recommendations. Their SEA Color Splash lipstick comes in a lot of nude browns and pinks that are good for everyday.
7 Revlon Super Lustrous In my opinion I’ve saved the best for last. This is my ride or die lipstick and I’ve owned it in multiple colors over the years. My favorite colors are coffee bean for year round wear and wine with everything and raisin rage in the fall. I also have this Stand Up Nudes set and love every single one of them.
