Reading Lately: What I Read in June

It’s time again for my monthly book reviews. I’m so glad that I renewed my childhood love of reading, and I hope you are inspired to read some too. Reading is a great way to escape the world and to learn new things.

No Ordinary Dog; My Partner from the SEAL Teams to the Bin Laden Raid by Will Chesney

I loved this! This is the story of a SEAL Team Six member/ military dog handler and his partner Cairo. Cairo is the Belgian Malinois who hit the ground in 2011 to take out bin Laden. The story of Operation Neptune Spear is only a small part of the story. I listened to the audio version which is narrated by Will. He does a great job and it’s good to hear his story told in his own voice. I own a Belgian Malinois so I have no trouble picturing the personality, intelligence, strength and determination of Cairo. He’s quite a character and served his country in greater ways than some humans dare. Any dog lover should read this. 4 stars

A Merciful Truth by Kendra Elliot Kindle Unlimited/Audible  #2 in the Mercy Kilpatrick series. I will eventually read all of this series. Someone is setting fires in Eagle’s Nest and when they turn deadly and result in the death of two deputies, Mercy and Police Chief Truman Daly are on the hunt for a murderer. Mercy is slowly reuniting with family but her brother Owen will have nothing to do with her. Her romance with Truman is growing but she’s still very guarded. There’s a lot of personal stuff going on with the characters but it’s a good mix with the mystery  and thrill of the hunt for the killer. 4 stars

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda- This is not what I call a thriller and it moved very slow. It took me from April to the middle of June to finish it. I started with the audio version but didn’t like the narrator so I switched to reading it in Scribd. It just dragged, but yet I was just invested enough to want to know what happened. There was a twist but it was anti-climatic by the time I got there. I was annoyed that I wasted my time on this one. Avery’s best friend Sadie dies during one of their end of summer parties and it’s ruled a suicide. Avery isn’t convinced and keeps looking for her own answers. Avery is telling their backstory while looking for clues but her storytelling isn’t very good. 2 stars

A Cold Trail/ Tracy Crosswhite #7 by Robert Dugoni

Tracy and Dan return to Cedar Grove to stay while they renovate their house. “Dan is drawn into representing a local merchant whose business is jeopardized by the town’s revitalization. And Tracy is urged by the local PD to put her own skills to work on a new case: the brutal murder of a police officer’s wife and local reporter who was investigating a cold-case slaying of a young woman. As Tracy’s and Dan’s cases crisscross, Tracy’s trail becomes dangerous. It’s stirring up her own haunted past and a decades-old conspiracy in Cedar Grove that has erupted in murder. Getting to the truth is all that matters. But what’s Tracy willing to risk as a killer gets closer to her and threatens everyone she loves?” This had a nice twist when the killer was revealed. Anything in this series is pretty solid. Read/ listened via Kindle Unlimited 3 stars

A Happy Catastrophe by Maddie Dawson This is a follow up to Matchmaking for Beginners, which I loved so I was excited to read this one. It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did, it was everything I would expect from this author. Marnie wants marriage and children, Patrick is still withdrawn and grieving his past. He doesn’t think he can even have children, but an 8 year old surprise shows up on their doorstep. Patrick retreats even further but ultimately learns he does have the ability to move beyond his past. Read/ listened via Kindle Unlimited 4 stars

A Merciful Secret by Kendra Elliot- Mercy Kilpatrick #3- I read two of the books in this series in June and I look forward to reading more. I really like Mercy’s character. On the way home from her cabin, Mercy encounters a young girl whose grandmother is dying from multiple knife wounds. Hundreds of miles away, a body is discovered slashed to death in a similar way. The victims—a city judge and an old woman living in the woods—couldn’t be more different. Mercy and her boyfriend, Police Chief Truman Daly, need to find the killer. Danger comes closer to Mercy and her sanctuary than she would like and figures from both her and Truman’s pasts surface. Read/listened via Kindle Unlimited 4 stars

Work Less, Make More: The counter-intuitive approach to building a profitable business, and a life you actually love- James Schramko A good book for anyone in business for themselves or thinking about going into business on their own. Read via Kindle Unlimited 3 stars

The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks. This one was recommended by the Faster Way to Fat Loss. I participated in the six week program in May/June. We often sabotage our success and relationships because we don’t think we deserve success. Sometimes our upper limits were set by childhood experiences. Hedricks teaches you to recognized this and move beyond your upper limits.

Reading has been the fuel of my motivation: it has changed the direction in which I have traveled, and it has enhanced my creative imagination more than any other activity I have ever pursued. Zig Ziglar
