Ever have those days, or series of days, when you just don’t feel like tackling that next project, to do list or heck, even like getting dressed? Yes, I’ve been there, and if it were not for the need of a paycheck, I’d probably lie around in my pajamas all day doing nothing but scrolling social media. Then come Saturday, that’s what I do- nothing. Because I lack motivation.
Can you identify with that frustrating feeling? You have things you want to do, or need to do, but you just can’t find the physical or mental energy to get started? Other days, you are on top of the world, and everything gets done. And then you come crashing down and the cycle repeats. Read on for 5 easy ways to motivate yourself.
“Of course motivation is not permanent. But then, neither is bathing; but it is something you should do on a regular basis.”
― Zig Ziglar, Raising Positive Kids in a Negative World
1- Know your WHY. Why do you want to do this thing, or start this project? Starting a diet? Why? to look better? feel better? be healthier? live longer for your loved ones? Whatever the project, or goal, know your reasons behind the action you want to take and focus on those.
“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.”
― Zig Ziglar
2. Just get started! Take small steps. I have chores I hate, but when I just go ahead and get started, they flow easier than I think and soon enough, they are done. Don’t feel like exercising? Just do 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. I bet when that time is up, you keep going.
“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”
― Zig Ziglar
3- Put on some fun music! Music greatly affects our mood, for better or worse. Choose some upbeat music you like to play in the background. If you are not a fan of music, try listening to a motivational podcast.
4- Accountability- We don’t have to live life alone. Enlist the help of others. Even if you don’t need or want their physical help, let them know your goals. Have an accountability partner that can check on your progress once in a while. Or share on social media and enlist the accountability of your social media friends and followers. It’s easy to give up if nobody else knows, but having some accountability helps keep up your motivation.
5- Reward yourself and celebrate your accomplishments! Lose 10 pounds? Treat yourself to some fun earrings. Get a big project knocked out and allow yourself 10 or 15 minutes to do something fun before moving on to the next step. Small rewards go a long way in keeping you motivated and focused.
Speaking of getting dressed, or not wanting too, I have struggled recently with “what to wear to work”. So yesterday I challenged myself to find something I haven’t been wearing to work and put a little more effort in than just grabbing the first matching suit that didn’t need ironing. This outfit is the result. I saved this top from my Kon Mari purge earlier in the year. Literally, it was in the bag to be donated or sold and I took it out and hung back it in the closet. I’ve never worn it with these pants so that was easy enough! I added a tan blazer because I usually need one, but if you don’t need that layer, let it go. Let a patterned blouse shine on its own.
