Think you can’t mix two patterns in one outfit, even a casual outfit? Would you dare mix the patterns in more formal office attire. Sure, it might border more on the business casual side of things, but you can mix plaid and stripes in an office outfit and still look professional. Keep reading to learn how.
Mixing plaid and stripes in an office outfit
Pattern mixing comes down to two things- colors and complimentary patterns. If you stay in the same color family, especially for a more conservative work environment, it will be easier to mix patterns.
Next, find one small pattern and one larger pattern. The plaid here is very subtle and the stripes are bolder. Because both are navy, it works out well. No one even batted an eye or raised an eyebrow at this even in my conservative office. Of course, by now, they are probably used to me going a little outside the norm, and they know better than to even question me, lol.

Because the pattern mixing is being done in a more conservative color like navy, it can be office appropriate. I don’t think I’d try this with bright colors, but sticking to the neutrals makes it office worthy. If you work in a more creative environment, go ahead and pattern mix with bright colors.
Layering in the solid color blazer ties it all together and keeps it more on the conservative side.
It has been said that plaid and stripes don’t mix, but they do because they are both graphic prints. Simple graphic prints are some of the easiest to mix. So go ahead and grab some stripes and plaids in the same color and rock them all the way to the office.
